In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to focus on the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The late summer revolt was sparked by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several major political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
