Zohran Mamdani Vows a 'New Era' for NYC in First Speech
On his inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” the metropolis, promising “a different age” and an ambitious beginning to his tenure.
A Historic Mayor
The young political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:
- Universal childcare
- Free buses
- A halt to rent increases for nearly 1 million households
- A pilot of municipally-operated grocery stores
The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has pledged to tax more heavily the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Navigating Political Challenges
The new mayor also faces concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past comments regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past social media posts.
Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.
The Basic Tests of Governing
Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing basic services: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, fixing potholes, and ensuring reliable subway service.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.
As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his speech with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
